Research Profile

In our research activities, we mainly focus on trade-related and institutional linkages between countries. We concentrate on inter- and intra-regional integration and institution building at the national and international level, as well as complementary aspects of financial and monetary policy. Regarding the regional focus of our research activities, we focus mainly on sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and East Asia. Apart from international trade, we also examine the determinants and effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), that is, north-south and south-south FDI. We analyze the role of development cooperation in fostering the integration of emerging markets and developing countries into the world economy and in ensuring that least developed countries have the minimum institutional setting they need to successfully integrate into world markets.

Our main research areas are as follows:

  • Regionalism and regional trade policy
  • The World Trade Organisation (WTO) in the globalization process
  • Trade facilitation and trade costs
  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and multinational corporations
  • Developing countries and development co-operation
  • Institutions and development
