Modular small-scale chemical plants can be installed in transport containers and offer high flexibility. This paper shows how a mathematical optimization model is used to optimize the economic benefits of small-scale plants for the production of specialty chemicals. Different scenarios created from real data of a chemical company show that the use of small-scale plants can lead to a significant reduction of total costs, mainly due to the reduction of transportation costs of raw materials and products.
