International Trade and Sustainable Development
The course is structured in two parts. In the first part, students are introduced to international trade theory at an advanced and analytical level. Topics include the fundamental gains from trade, the role of imperfect competition in shaping trade patterns and welfare, firm-level heterogeneity in trade and investment, and the rationale behind trade-restrictive policies. Attention is also given to the institutional framework of global trade, with a focus on the World Trade Organization (WTO) as well as regional and bilateral trade agreements. In the second part, students develop and present case studies on the intersections of trade and sustainability. Case study themes may include income distribution, labour and environmental standards, enabling students to link theoretical insights with real-world policy challenges.
