His research is focused among others on determinants of creativity and innovation within organisations, dealing with setbacks in innovation and start-up processes, as well as aspects of social innovation and social entrepreneurship. In his opinion innovation is not tied one-sidedly to making short-term profit, but can benefit society as a whole by taking account of aspects of sustainability such as e.g. climate and environmental protection, a safe and healthy working environment or social justice. This applies particularly to the current large-scale transformation process in the Ruhr region.
